Meeker is in the northwest corner of Colorado, halfway between Rifle and Craig. Thunderbird Lodge is 23 miles west of Meeker on County Road 17, also know as the Buford-New Castle road. It sits on a ridge south of the White River Valley and overlooks Lake Avery (aka Little Beaver Reservoir.)
Coulter Field is just east of Meeker and has a 6000' runway, but no scheduled airline service. Commercial service is available at 3 airports, all of which are less than 2 hours away. They are Grand Junction (GJT), Eagle-Vail (EGE), and Hayden-Steamboat (HDN).
You can book the property by selecting "Book Now" and you will be linked to the Reservation website. You can also call us directly at 877 808-3845.
Although you're not far from 10,000-foot terrain, the lodge itself is at approximately 7,400 feet. You'll definitely need some warmer clothes after the sun goes down.
The kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of pots, pans, utensils, bowls and standard kitchen appliances like a nespresso machine, drip coffee makers, a toaster and a blender. Outside, there is a stainless-steel gas grill and a 5-burner Blackstone Griddle. Even in the winter, we love to cook outside in the crisp mountain air.
If you're not familiar with induction stoves, this might challenge you. They work great and are safer because the burners won't burn you; however, only ferrous-metal (magnetic) pans will heat up. Aluminum pots and pans will not work. Thankfully, we have sorted through the pans so everything in the kitchen is compatible, but if you bring your own non-ferrous pans, you'll be disappointed. Because of the glass surface on the stove, we do not allow cast iron pans. You are welcome to use the cast iron Blackstone Griddle on the deck any time.
Also, the microwave is both a standard microwave as well as a convection oven in case you need two ovens for a big crowd. We have operating instructions for all appliances located in the tall cupboard next to the wine rack.
Finally, the kitchen floor is heated. The temperature control is just outside the bathroom door. It's nice and cozy . We do appreciate your help in conserving energy when it's not needed.
Mosquitoes are few and far between until you get closer to the lake and river. Bring bug repellent if you're spending much time near the water; otherwise, there are a few areas in the National Forest that have occasional deer flies and some seasonal biting black flies. Thankfully, it's usually more miss than hit on those.
You are cleared to ride OHVs on all the roads in Rio Blanco County. The exception is if the road is on National Forest which starts just a few miles up the road from the Lodge. Technically, the rangers (who are few and far between) would have you trailer to the top of Burro Mountain, then recreate on designated Forest Service trails from that point. If you go down the hill and up the county road along the river, however, you can ride until the wheels fall off.
We shouldn't have to ask, but please keep OHVs off the lawn. The aggressive tires can really chew up the grass, particularly if you're turning around. Thanks!
We do not allow campfires on the property. Consistently, during the summer, fires are banned any way. We hope to get a safe and legal, firepit on the property soon. Until then, we are grateful for your cooperation on this.
